Independent Travel Part II – I have no time!

Yesterday we talked about Independent Travel as a means of gaining perspective. I truly think travel is one of the greatest educators. Submerging yourself in different cultures and seeing how people around the world live can be an eye opening experience.

Sadly many people will miss out on this experience because of common objections holding them back from going on an amazing journey. The next few posts will be dedicated to overcoming these objections to independent travel.

I have no time!

“Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.” – Harvey MacKay

How you spend your time is important. Once you waste time, it’s gone. Forever.

Most of us only get two weeks of vacation. How is it possible to leave for a month or longer?

Have a conversation with your employer.

Talk to your boss. Tell your boss about your plan. See if there are any options as far as unpaid time off or a leave of absence you can take. This may be a scary conversation to have but it’s worth it to see what your options are. Maybe it’s easier than you think.

Quit your job. –

“Quitters never get ahead!”

“Never quit, never give up!”

Our society is telling us constantly not to quit and to never give up. In many cases this is considered noble. I agree if the goal is worth while.

Okay, lets really take another look at this: Let’s say you had a job as a janitor that you hated. Does it really make sense to stay at that job forever? Never quit? Always be in a job you hate. NO!!! That makes no sense. Quiting is scary, but sometimes it’s necessary.

Ask yourself this question: How would you like to spend your time?

A comment on yesterdays post made me realize I have left out other objections. Can you think of any other objections that should be included to the list?

1)I have no time.
2)I have no money.
3)I don’t want to travel alone.
4)Isn’t that dangerous?
5)People will miss me.
6)I’m in a serious relationship
7)I have kids.

Independent Travel Part I

I was talking with a good friend about gaining perspective in life. What I realized is many people get so caught up in the day to day routine they don’t have enough time to reflect on what they are actually doing.

For my friend I prescribed a month of independent travel. Independent travel is one of the best ways to re-examine your patterns. It’s the only real way to get out of the day to day routine that most of us are trapped in.

Once you’re out of your routine it’s much easier to take an outside observer’s view of your life instead of the common biased view we normally have.

Unfortunately for most people Independent travel seems like impossibility. The most common excuses are:

1) I have no time.

2) I have no money.

3) I don’t want to travel alone.

4) Isn’t that dangerous?

Sometimes change can be the best thing in the world, no matter how scary it is. What do you think are ways around these objections to Independent travel? Would you skip town for a month and travel the world? If you could, where would you go?

Stay tuned for my next post about how to overcome these objections.

The I fell down some stairs edition.

This weekend I fell down a flight of stairs in my apartment. I slipped on a couple drops of water. That’s all it takes. One wrong move and everything is derailed.

One minute you are here, the next… gone. “This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time.” The clock is ticking…

My life could have ended right there. I could have broken my neck. Instead I managed to escape giving up the ghost without a scratch. This time.

It makes you think, doesn’t it? At least it made me think, about a lot of things.

Are you getting what you want out of life?

Have you found your passion?

Are you living your life to the fullest?

Are you not doing what you want to because you’re afraid of something?

Stockpile Sparks Edition

The absinthe bar was a complete disaster for my liver as predicted. Imagine if you will a snowy night in NYC. The cold wind bites at your face and the secret puddles are rampant. Secret puddles, for those of you not in the know, are those little bits of ice at the edge of the sidewalk that look perfectly innocent. Then once you step on them, it’s an instant ground hog day type plunge into 8 inches of slush. The cold seeps into your shoe and you get angry. “Watch that step…”

Okay so what’s not to love about free absinthe? For one it kills all your ambition for getting anything accomplished the next day, and two it’s not even the real stuff you get in Europe.

Onto the most important part of this post: If you like Sparks Energy Drink stock pile it now. In fact buy as much as you can.

They are getting rid of the caffeine! MillerCoors LLC is taking the caffeine out of its Sparks line of energy drinks, which list ginseng, taurine and 6 to 7 percent alcohol among its other ingredients. “We’re doing it to protect the public health of our young people and to reform business practices,””

I know you are all as shocked and appalled as I am. So do me a favor, put as much of this stuff in your fridge as you can.

“He estimated the agreement, announced Thursday, removes 85 percent of caffeine-spiked booze from the market.”

Who out there wants to help me formulate a new Alcoholic Energy Drink? If 85% of the market is gone, that means there is a huge niche. What would your formula be? Or should these drinks go to the way sides like many other great inventions of the past? Are they really a danger to the youth? I mean, look what they did to me…

Energetically Yours,

-Dan

PS: The 2009 Plan is almost complete. I hope you have yours formulated too. 2009 is going to be amazing!

NYC Update – Cold Weather , Open Bars, Economic Crisis, and 2009 Plan

I realized it’s been a long time since I’ve written one of these updates. Most times I like to gloat about how warm the weather is where I am. This year is different. I am in the cold, no crazy insane escape plan this year.

I’ve had to find a way to deal with the weather. I think alcohol goes great with cold weather, especially free alcohol. I’ve found a great website for some of the major cities in the USA:

http://nyc.myopenbar.com/ - This site tells you where all the free booze are. Use it wisely my son.

I’m going to the event at Webster Hall tonight. Two hour Absinthe Open Bar!? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe )

Sounds like a recipe for a disaster or like a party Earnest Hemingway and those other authors who consumed the stuff would go to. Did you know Absinthe was banned in the USA for like 100 years and it expired so now it’s legal again?

Okay, so it’s not all fun and games. There is an Economic Crisis going on. The media keeps saying it’s going to be the worst recession since the great depression. I never thought I would see something like this in my lifetime. It’s absolutely insane…

It’s scary, Now I can’t go out and buy Plasma screen TVs!!!! Noooo!

Then I think about what I really have: great family and friends! You are all very important and very special and thanks for reading because you are all amazing. It may sound corny but it’s true and I really mean it.

Lately I’ve been thinking about some crazy goals and plans for 2009. I think I will follow up with a different email about what they are. Right now I’m still in the planning stage.

What are your plans? What would you like to do in 2009 that you’ve held off on doing? How can you make the greatest impact? Really write back to me on this one.

One Love,

Dan
